Abstract :
One of the measures of the human resource quality development is the improvement of the people’s physical quality, which depends on the growth and development. Nutrient and health condition greatly influence the child growth. This latter is reflected by the body height, and the height of early school aged children in certain area can be used as an indicator of the height achievement of the people in the area. This study was aimed to know the height of early school aged children in Kabupaten Purworejo.
The body height measuring was done on 22-25 April, 1996, by trained health workers. The samples were recruited by cluster sampling covering the pupils of 32 elementary schools of all kecamatans in Kabupaten Purworejo.
Standardized height microtoises were used. The height means of 6-8 year old children were 0,9-3,1 cm larger those of national data, while that of 9 year girls were 0,1 cm smaller. All height means were smaller than 50% percentile of standard. The prevalence of growth disorder in Kabupaten Purworejo as a whole was 35,8% of severe level, higher than the national prevalence (30,1%). Specifically among 16 kecamatans in Purworejo, 11 kecamatans were under the category of severe level (>30%), 4 were found with moderate levels (20,0%-29,9%), and only 1 kecamatan with mild level. None of the kecamatans was in the ease level (less than 10%). Mountainuous kecamatans were with higher prevalence of growth disorder.
